Prepaid phone activation precautions
- Activate only a line you will use yourself. Borrowing or lending a name violates Article 30 of the Telecommunications Business Act, and under Article 97, No. 7 it is punishable by up to 1 year in prison or a fine of up to 50 million KRW.
- Stop if someone asks you to activate a line or give a verification code for a loan or a job, or tells you to activate in the name of an investigation agency or financial institution.
- If you activate online, be sure to answer the 1899-7700 confirmation call within 3 days. It comes once to the number you verified with and once to the activated number. If you don’t answer, the number may be terminated.
- On the day of activation, top up one month of the plan you chose, and after topping up, turn your phone off and on 2 to 3 times.
- If you have unpaid N-Telecom bills, activation is possible after you pay in full. If you activated 3 lines within the last 180 days, it is possible after that period has passed.
- A KT Baro SIM may not be recognized on a phone with a KT unpaid or overdue history. If you keep using that phone, go with an LG SIM.
- Number porting is not available on Sundays and public holidays. Plan prices do not include the cost of the phone itself.

You can also ask by phone or text →Should I put the SIM in my phone before activation?
No. Insert the SIM you bought only after activation is complete and you have topped up.
My phone is suspended and I can’t receive verification texts.
Even on a suspended phone, you can verify your identity with a KakaoTalk or Toss certificate by connecting to Wi-Fi. You can then continue straight on to the new number application. PASS can’t be used on a terminated line.
Can I get a prepaid phone while paying unpaid bills in installments?
Yes. Even with unpaid bills at another carrier, prepaid can be activated in your own name. Create a new number before incoming calls are also suspended, and discuss installment payment of the remaining bill with that carrier. If you have unpaid N-Telecom bills, pay them in full first.
Can I use my old number again?
If the number has no overdue or unpaid amounts or remaining micropayment balance and has been used for 3 months or more, you can move it by number porting. Porting is not possible while unpaid amounts remain, so activate a new number first, settle the unpaid amounts, and then check the conditions again.
Can I use it just by inserting the SIM?
No. You need to fill in the application, enter the SIM number, and top up after activation. For online activation, also answer the 1899-7700 confirmation call that comes within 3 days.
What do I do after activating a new number?
On the day of activation, top up and turn your phone off and on 2 to 3 times. The 1899-7700 confirmation call that comes within 3 days arrives once on the verified number and once on the activated number, so be sure to answer. If you don’t answer, the number may be terminated.
Does using a prepaid phone lower my credit score?
No. Using a prepaid phone has nothing to do with your credit score.
Can I make micropayments with a prepaid phone?
No. Micropayments are blocked on prepaid phones, where you top up in advance.
How many lines can one person activate?
Korean citizens can activate up to 3 lines within the last 180 days. Online is limited to 1 N-Telecom line, and if you need more, use in-person activation.
